Published on May 01, 2024 by Beatrice Alvarez

You've come to right place if you've ever thought about growing your own food. We don't think there is such a thing as a green thumb, or a brown one for that matter. We firmly believe that anyone can learn to be the source of their own food! We have tips and plant advice from farmers and gardeners all over the country thanks to our local PBS stations.

The Family Plot

From station WKNO in Memphis, Tennessee: Join horticulture expert Dr. Chris Cooper from the UT Shelby County Extension Service, and other experts, as they share their garden wisdom, answer e-mails and letters about your lawn and garden, and take you on field trips throughout the Mid-South to help you keep your Family Plot green and growing.

Cabbage is wonderful. This is not up for debate. I'm not the only one who loves cabbage, by the way. We can go around the world and see how many cultures have a delicious and unique cabbage-based dish. So why not learn how to grow your own cabbage? You will be able to eat it as a topping, in a slaw, fermented, or steamed and stuff with meat. I could go on but I won't. Instead, I'll leave you with this episode of The Family Plot:

Modern Gardener

Modern Gardener (produced by Utah PBS) is an excellent resource for all things gardening. Watch this episode, titled "Seeds vs. Starts: The Pros and Cons" before you start growing anything this season. Did you know you can grow plant starts from either seed or buy the starts from a nursery? Host Cynthia Stringham goes over the pros and cons of each to help you along your garden planning journey.

Let's Grow Stuff

Just as the show's title suggests, Let's Grow Stuff helps anyone and everyone start and maintain their garden!  This show is produced by PBS Wisconsin, but has great tips for gardeners in all regions.

Hosted by gardener and horticulturist Ben Futa, along with Qwantese Winters, Let’s Grow Stuff is designed to help the beginning gardener learn the tools of successful gardening. Each episode provides quick and easy techniques to make growing fun!

In this episode below, you get a simple lesson on how to prepare containers for growing your favorite herbs.

Edible Academy

Get the kids involved in growing your own food! In this Camp TV clip from 2020, Arvolyn from the New York Botanic Garden teaches how to use food scraps to make your own "regrow garden."
