Far West Texas is a place where local folklore looms as large as the landscape. Two fronteriza women — one a public radio music show host, the other a Mariachi and folklórico dancer — live in two cultures at the same time, as they struggle to find their place in the vast Chihuahuan Desert. Touches of magical realism infuse this portrait of life along the U.S.- Mexico border.
Alejandra Vasquez is a Mexican-American filmmaker. Raised in West Texas, Alex directed the short films Folk Frontera, winner of the Grand Jury Award of Texas Shorts at SXSW, and When It’s Good, It’s Good. Alex is currently in production, directing her debut feature about competitive high school mariachi teams in South Texas.
Sam Osborn's debut feature-length documentary, Universe, was awarded Best Music Documentary by the International Documentary Association in 2021. He is currently in production with Osmosis Films on his second feature-length project, Going Varsity in Mariachi.
Independent Lens is an Emmy Award-winning series on PBS. The acclaimed series, with Lois Vossen as executive producer, features documentaries united by the creative freedom, artistic achievement, and unflinching visions of independent filmmakers. Presented by ITVS, the series is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people, with additional funding from PBS, Action Family Giving, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
