The new super-efficient surgery receptionist, Miss Higgins always wears a neat tailored costume and a hat indoors. She finds fault in Shelagh’s well-organized filing, but despite her cracking the whip and her fastidious and finicky manner, Shelagh has become adept at facing her down and a respectful affection takes root.
Miss Higgins is actually very kind and is longing for company. She lives alone, and her parents both died in the blitz. Her only relative, an uncle, lives in Canada. She is an ardent royalist and proudly displays a picture of the Queen at the maternity home.
