A patient on Joyce’s (Renee Bailey) district rounds, Alf Cottered (David Throughton), proves to be a difficult neighbour for a family upstairs. He also asks Joyce pointed questions about her background. The subtle racism isn’t lost on her but she remains professional. Fred (Cliff Parisi) knows Alf well and so she asks for his assistance. As Joyce arrives at the property, there is a sudden gas explosion. It’s carnage and the walking wounded exit the building. Fred arrives to help lead people to safety.
Following a mother’s textbook labour, Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) is alarmed by a small but definite lesion on the base of the newborn’s spine. Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) believes this is a case of spina bifida which is later confirmed by a specialist. The parents are utterly devasted and don’t think they can cope with having a disabled child.
Trixie (Helen George) attends an intense meeting with the Board of Health.
