It’s September 1970 and the local dustbin men are on strike because of a pay dispute. This means mountains of rubbish have built up around Poplar and a refuse site has been established outside Nonnatus House. Fred (Cliff Parisi) and Reggie (Daniel Laurie) disinfect Nonnatus’ front steps when a little girl asks if there are rats. Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) defends the rodents, saying they are God’s creatures.
Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) steps in to lead a Cubs session which has been moved indoors due to the rubbish. The cubs find the indoor session boring but Sister Monica Joan saves the day by speaking to the Cubs about her life during The Blitz.
Elsewhere, Trixie (Helen George) has everyone up on their feet showcasing the exercises and benefits involved in early ambulation.
Violet orders an unwell Reggie back to bed and not to worry about who will feed Nigel the cat. That night, Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) returns home and is surprised to see Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) there feeding a poorly Nigel.
Later, Rosalind is unwell in bed with a fever and Joyce takes on her rounds. They include a visit to a very rude patient she has encountered once before who takes offence to being examined by her.
