Autumn is truly in the air and Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) is back at the helm after her Devonshire break. A young man admits to her that he’s partway through applying to the army but has yet to tell his dependent mother who is bedbound and immobile.
Joyce (Renee Bailey) receives confirmation of a disciplinary hearing regarding the recent complaint which has been upheld. Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) reassures her that she has everyone’s support.
Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) volunteers at a new methadone clinic to treat heroin addiction. His first patient is the husband of a heavily pregnant woman who also used to take heroin. Whilst at the clinic, her urine sample drops to the floor and she is reluctant to provide another. This causes concern for the midwives.
Meanwhile, the Turners receive a letter confirming May’s (April Rae Hoang) adoption hearing and Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) is invited to take her first vows to become a novice nun. She is thrilled but shares her concern about her estranged family.
Later, some of the team attend a glamorous royal film premiere of a local film, Bronco Bullfrog, dressed in their finest outfits.
