On her rounds, a tired Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) visits a pregnant woman living in an abandoned warehouse with her family. She’s flustered and nervy around her imposing husband and refuses to be examined. Sister Julienne’s attention is drawn to her bruised wrist and a bump to her head.
Shelagh (Laura Main) visits a patient who lives inside an iron lung in his front room after being paralysed from the polio infection. His wife is his main carer but Shelagh worries she is looking jaundiced and arranges a visit from Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Harry (Eisa Latif), who is joining him on his house calls for the summer.
Reggie (Daniel Laurie) escorts a young boy with a head wound to Nonnatus House. As Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) dresses it, he explains that he was mimicking the discus in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games. The following day, Violet (Annabelle Apsion) decides Poplar will host its own Commonwealth Games and convinces Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) to join forces for a summer children’s play scheme.
