Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and the team prepare the dusty spare room for a new arrival. A knock at the door reveals Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) who has arrived a day early. Sister Catherine is a postulant as well as studying for her part two midwifery exams. She has a busy workload ahead.
At the surgery, there is disappointment due to the low number of responses for the measles vaccination clinic. Meanwhile, Shelagh (Laura Main) delivers a bag of laundry to the laundrette and meets a strained mother with her seven-year-old son who is severely disabled, following complications from measles.
Meanwhile Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) deals with a mother who has made the difficult decision to ask for an abortion. Her husband is off work because of the docker’s strike and she has seven other children to support. Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) refers her to another doctor as it must be signed off by two, and suggests that if she no longer wants children it might be worth considering sterilization.
