Outside Nonnatus House, a modest but jolly little fireworks gathering. A bonfire burns in a brazier, rockets are being lined up in jam jars, children are eating toffee apples and Mrs. Wallace (Linda Hargreaves) is handing around cake. Shelagh (Laura Main) is surprised to hear the social worker has pulled their meeting forward since there has been a change in circumstances and May’s (April Rae Hoang) mother wants to speak to May herself.
Elsewhere, Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) and Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) are sorting through second-hand cub uniforms when there is a knock at the door. The person on the other side of it reveals some information that stops Miss Higgins in her tracks and she swiftly asks Nurse Crane to leave.
Violet (Annabelle Apsion) and Reggie (Daniel Laurie) are out doing errands when a bus conductor runs towards them with news that a woman is unwell on his bus.
It’s the Poplar Mother Of The Year competition at St Oswald’s Hall. Violet is in her mayoral chains. Reggie - center stage - describes how his miniature garden represents both mothers, Colette (Francesca Fullilove) has painted a picture of Nancy and the Turner children have written a poem about Shelagh.
